New Rig - any ideas/help more than welcome
« on: October 19, 2011, 06:51:33 pm »
Ok, so my current system is fking up more than ever. Been a while since i've upgraded so decided to get nearly an entire new rig. This will be primarily a Gaming Rig.

Before I get into parts etc, was wondering if anyone knew:

the diff between Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit? Home Edition and Pro?

are monitors like just LCD Tv's? I have a 46'' Sony Bravia LCD with a HDMI input spare. Can I run this as a monitor?

Win 7 64bit without a doubt - run all the RAM you need

I'd forget using the 46" as a monitor it'll be 1080p and will look all stretched out for gaming.

Give me a budget and a list of what you need eg. whole system or just upgrade monitor and any manufacturer preferences you have.

Ok ta man, will be buying from MSY
http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

Was looking at a
Intel 1155pin Core i5-2500K    $221
as a base so would need appropriate motherboard, graphics card, monitor, power supply, Dual Layer DVDRW / Blu-Ray, Ram,
would look at using a solid state drive.

Already have a:
Creative SB X-FI Fatality soundcard (though I have heard onboard sound is just as good these days)
Hard Disk :   Western Digital WD5000AAKS-00YGA0 (500GB)
Antec gaming case not sure of model but has a big fan at top and two more smaller ones at front and can see into rig on one side.
Logitech G11 keyboard
Razor diamond back mouse

Would look at spending up to 1.5K.................
What about a 27'' monitor? Are they any good. Like Doomy, I wanna see porn life size..............

This is just a suggestion.  (prices from umart.com.au oh btw fuck gamedude in the arse the mong eyed cunts)

Intel Core i7 2600 LGA1155 3.4GHz CPU                                          $320.00
Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3-B3 Mother Board                                            $135.00
OZC 120GB Vertex III SSD                                                            $259.00
Corsair 6Gb (3 x 2Gb Triple Channel) PC-12800                            $149.00
Sapphire ATI HD6970 2GB GDDR5                                                    $379.00
Samsung S23A300B 23inch LED DVI D-Sub 5ms                             $169.00
Windows 7 Pro x64                                                                            $138.00
                                                                                 Total              $1,549.00

Sorry just over $1.5k but with some minor shuffles you could get under it.

*  I would recommend an i7 over an i5 if you are going to game.
*  Motherboards generally are fairly standard at low to mid, but maybe someone can recommend a better cheap board.
*  I have 2 OZC HD's and they are fucking pheonminal... I think I have ranted about them in the under the hood thread.
*  RAM, better to get 6Gb Triple Channel than 8Gb dual, unless you are doing some serious video editing you probably won't need more.
*  Video cards are a tough one, I love/hate both ATI and Nividia.  I currently have 2 x 5890's at home and a 6990 at work and they have their issues but they have some power in them, I would probably drop them for a Nvidia if it would out perform for the same price.  6970 is a good mid range card, you can always move to Crossfire for a cheap upgrade in the future.
* I recommend you don't go above a 23" monitor unless you are willing to put down some serious cash.  Again I have ranted about the 1080p monster on another thread.  Any bigger than 23" and in my opinion at 1080p you are gunna get some ugly stretched out shit.  I have two Dell U2711's (27" 2560 x 1440) at work and they are awesome (even if everything is a wee bit small) but they cost $800 each, I just bought a U3011 (30" 2560 x 1600) for home as one of my kiddies drew on my other monitor and would recommend the 24" + Dell UltraSharp Monitors but you pay out the arse for 'em.  Oh should point out for cheap nice monitors I always like Samsung.
* Windows 7... if you are using XP move along son. (am I going to get flamed for suggesting that XP should be put in a shallow grave?)

Optional:

I used to have one of the Antec cases you have, if it is the one where the hard drive slots point at the motherboard put it in the bin and invest in a new case.  I bought the below one for my work pc and it has been pretty bloody good.

CoolerMaster RC-932-KKN5-GP HAF Advanced Black Case USB3.0     $178.00

I think that would do it, everyone will have their opinions on brands, etc. just go with what you are comfortable with.

*  I would recommend an i7 over an i5 if you are going to game.

All depends on the i7 you are recommending don't confuse two different sockets. 1155 not 1366 !

The main differences between the 2600k & the 2500 is hyperthreading enabled and the core multipliers unlocked.

Hyperthreading isnt written into any games and the 2500 overclocks very well without the need to change the multi's.

I'd pick the 2500

Edit: ooohhh forgot the 2500k is about now again. I'd pick that ;P

Dont confuse the poor lad socket 1155 doesnt do triple channel. Strictly missionary position down the line.

Get 8 gig.

Intel Core i5 2500K Processor LGA1155 3.3GHz CPU                             $228.00
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3R-B3 1155 2PCIEX16 SATA2/3 USB2/3                     $176.00
G SKill 8G(2x4G)DDR3 2133Mhz PC3-17000(F3-17000CL11D-8GBXL)      $116.00

Sapphire ATI HD6950 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E       $300.00
Antec ATX TruePower 750W                       $138.00
OZC 120GB Vertex III SSD                                $259.00

you sort out the rest

er just knocked off a bottle of red and a joint and watched "Kill the Irishman" so this may be a daft question but will a 750 watt power supply be enough to power all that stuff?

PSU! Fuck I knew I forgot something grrr, really was tired when I posted.  I generally don't bother looking at hardware until I'm ready to upgrade, I'll do my research when I'm ready to go and then take a step back.  I'm also rusty because my IT Monkey at work tends to put any new systems together and that is rare enough as money for IT is definitely not easy to get from head office.

With this motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3R-B3 1155 2PCIEX16 SATA2/3 USB2/3
would I still bother installing my SB X-Fi sound card?

Also does anyone know how to tell what PSU I am currently running without having to open the case up?
Cant find in everest or PC wizard.
